How it all started...
The local congregation finds its genesis with two ladies who were known for ministering to the people in the margins, such as poor people living near the river. Baton Rouge First Church of the Nazarene was officially organized on May 29, 1929 with Rev. Claud Mayo as the pastor.
The Church of the Nazarene traces its origins back to the late 19th century in the United States. It emerged from within the Holiness movement and the teachings of pastor Phineas F. Bresee. Formally organized in 1908 in Pilot Point, Texas, the Church of the Nazarene believes in entire sanctification and believes in the possibility of personal holiness.
Over the years, it expanded internationally, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The Church of the Nazarene has become known for its involvement in compassionate ministries and social justice issues. Today, the Church of the Nazarene is as a global denomination with almost 3 million members. It remains committed to its original mission to spread the message of radical transformation through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
